What is the embassy?

A permanent diplomatic mission is typically known as an embassy which is a bridge between two countries. There are many potential travellers who need to cross this bridge: from the students to the tourist, from the businessman to the common citizen. Information is the first need on this quest and today information technology provides us with the fastest portal to direct communication.

The only time you think about your embassy is when you get stuck in a foreign country, without passport, no financial backup, and the authorities are on your case. This is a little too late to start looking for your ambassador. While visiting another country for business or leisure, be sure to notify with your embassy your presence as this will accord you the needed protection you will need. In simplicity, you need to understand what is involved in an embassy and how you will benefit from your embassy.

Embassy can be defined as the diplomatic mission or delegation from another state to represent their state in the host country or state. The use of the word dates back to 1570s when M.Fr embassee would send out various persons known as ambassadors to other towns for trade related deals. The culture grew over time to what is the present day embassy.

An ambassador has the sole responsibility of heading an embassy. The ambassadors’ sole interest is to represent his country and government in the host state. The embassy has key divisions which include economic section, travel section and defense sections. This is because all embassies operate with the laws that govern their independent states and not that of the host country.

The economic section basically deals with business related issues such as investment opportunities, trade between the states, economic empowerment and social welfare of the people. It’s through these sectors that developing states receive grants from the developed state to help in improving infrastructure and other developmental areas.

Travel agency helps assist those wishing to travel to or those visiting the host country from their state. The travel agency will help in passport handling, entry clearance as well as market various destinations and scholarships whenever available. It also looks to follow up on the status of those travelling i.e. its nationals visiting the host country don’t overstay or misbehave or undertake illegal dealings. They also provide adequate information on where to visit, the safe zones and insecure areas not to be visited.

Defense section works mainly within the embassy and residence of the ambassador. This is due to the basis of operating within the legal frame work of their state. Therefore whenever you set foot in any embassy be sure to know the laws and rules have changed.

Operating right under the ambassador is the consulate who is mostly found in towns away from the capital where the embassy is situated. The consulate does not negotiate with the state but rather deal directly with the citizens from their state living, working or on leisure in the host state.

The embassy is tasked with various key functions which include but not limited to the following;

-Service interests of its government. The embassy and diplomatic mission will ensure that the host country abide by the agreement and terms of their relationship.

-Service interests of its people in foreign land. This is done through provision of adequate information and travel advice to its people.

-Political issues. The embassy has to see that political stability is met at all costs thereby protecting their interests and the interests of the host state.

With the above covered, you have all the reasons to visit your embassy while in a foreign country and get the best out of your ambassador.
